In 1966, an enterprising man, Jack Wilkinson, decided that Traverse City, the cherry capital of the world, needed a cherry store, and Benjamin Twiggs was born. Named by his daughter, Jane, (read the legend), they created cherry goodies from our local bounty to be enjoyed by locals and visitors.
During the next 50 years, locals and visitors have enjoyed local cherry treats and created memories of eating or gifting our goods.
In August, to commemorate this milestone, we threw a party! Visitors included Jane and her family (including grandson Jack, our founder’s namesake), prior owners Doug (and Doris) Murdick, Sr, Cal Little, other prior owners family members, and many previous employees. It was a great walk down memory lane for some, and I heard some great stories!
A ribbon cutting ceremony was put on by the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce, with the honors of cutting the ribbon given to National Cherry Queen Abbey Kaufman. Approximately 150 locals, visitors, friends, and family were also in attendance.. including Super Cherry, the National Cherry Festival mascot!
Finally, our new label design was revealed to the public, and will be seen on products in our store this fall. Our new look is part original branding, part current branding, and a splash of fun and creativity. We love it!
We look forward to providing local cherry goods for the next 50 years, and thank everyone who attended our party!
